Makaila Archer

COTA
Certified occupational therapy assistant

I graduated from Lavaca High School and immediately attended Arkansas Tech University, where I perused my degree to become a COTA.

I have been a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant for 5 years and have most of my experience with adults. I started my career getting a job from a clinical rotation in inpatient rehab, then spent a little time with pediatrics and am now back with adults in outpatient therapy.

Compassion – We typically meet people at the beginning of a life changing event. It is so much for family and the patient to take in and often become overwhelmed. It is so important to lead with compassion and build a relationship with the patient and caregivers.
Creativity – Occupational therapy is 100% patient centered. My goal is to make our therapy sessions meaningful and relatable for the patient to get them back to being as independent as possible.
Teamwork – Many patients receive PT and speech therapy as well as occupational therapy. Teamwork is so important in order for the patient to reach their goals.

“Keep your face towards the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind you.” Walt Whitman

I want to fix depression. Even though I can’t just take it away, I can make a difference and be there for patients during a very vulnerable time in their life. My goal is to just have fun and be able to help the patient escape during our time together.

The condition I enjoy treating is neuro. It is absolutely crazy what our brain is capable of. Rehab after a stroke, Parkinson’s, and spinal cord injuries are some of my favorite diagnoses to work with.

Everyone is like family, including the patients. The work-life balance is unbeatable.
